U8 COACHES AND MANAGERS NIGHT 2002 - MINUTES

The club now has 1200 players and is one of the top 5 clubs in NSW in terms of size.

In 2001 the Club's Premier League team won the prestigious NSW Champions of Champions
Competition which This requires a substantial volunteer effort of which the U8 Coaches and
Managers are a crucial part.

Jim Koopman gave a general thank you to all the U8 C&M's for their assistance to date.

It is much appreciated.

The meeting agenda included:

1	The transition to ¾ fields

2	In preparation for the transition to ¾ fields the most important technique for an
U/8 player to achieve by the end of the season is the "push pass".

If players learn to pass the ball properly and accurately then they can be competitive
	at all levels.

The only difference in grading should be the speed at which they can do it.

If at the end of this year, you as an U8 coach can have all players passing the ball
properly with both feet, performing basic goalkeeping duties and receiving the ball
reasonably well you can consider yourself an unqualified success.

After these techniques have been mastered you should work on the lofted instep kick
which will be more important next year on the ¾ field.

U8 Pittwater/Wakehurst Challenge Cup Gala Day

The U8 Gala Day is to be held on Sunday the 4th August.

As Jim Koopman will be skiing that weekend he requested that the U8's liase with each other to
make the day a success. (Thanks to Mike Seko for getting underway with this task with his e-mail
last week).

The tasks required are:

a	Preparation of the Draw - by Jim Koopman (and Wakehurst's Andrew Edwards - to be
	confirmed.)

b	Organisation of equipment for the day - Setup table, 2 chairs, microphone and check the
aerosol hooter has gas. VOLUNTEER NEEDED

c	Organisation of rosters - BBQ, Nets, Referees. VOLUNTEER NEEDED

d	Scorekeeper and Timekeeper. VOLUNTEER NEEDED.

e	Pittwater representative to make the presentation of trophies to the teams

As stated in Mike's e-mail the teams are grouped accordingly to their win-loss record.

WIN-LOSS RECORDS ARE DUE THIS WEEKEND.

Include your Goals "For" and "Against" if possible.

A DRAFT Gala Day information is attached so that volunteers can see what is involved.

The final Information sheet will be sent out with the draws.

Player assessment - DUE NOW

Each U8 coach is required to complete a Player Assessment report.

These reports give vital information for player grading and assessment.

A "Word" copy is attached to this mail if you have misplaced yours or wish to fill in a
computer copy.

The reports are used to make up an end of season profile that is the basis for next year's

grading.

The U/8 reports are critical for grading the transition to U/9.

Coaches see their players every week and are generally in the best position to evaluate the
players.

The reports are used only for grading.

The Player Assessment Form is to be completed and lodged in the Match Report Box at Kitchener
Park by this Saturday 29th June or e-mailed to Jim Koopman at gangways@aol.com.

U9 GRADING PROCESS

Teams are graded Red (1st division) and Blue (2nd division).

Ungraded teams will form the Yellow and Green Groups.

The following process assumes approximately 70 triallists as per 2001 grading assessments after
registration and assumes 2 Red / 2 Blue teams (44-48 players) is the end result of the grading
process.

THIS YEAR (2002)

1	U8 Coaches Player Assessments submitted as stated above and grouped by the Age
Coordinator into preliminary RED>PURPLE and BLUE>GREEN grading groups and recorded in a
	Player Assessment Summary.

2	Coaches from current and recent U9 teams are invited by the subjunior vice president to
assess players at the U8 Challenge Cup Gala Day and adjust the Player Assessment Summary
to obtain parity between teams of different ability.

NEXT YEAR (2003)

3	U9 players at registration are asked if they would like to participate in the grading
	trial process.

Any new players or players who would like to trial that are not on the original list are
	able to nominate.

4	Players who do not wish to be graded will only need to attend a team grouping day as per
U6,7,8's to be held on or after the second trial day for graded teams

5	Preliminary Graded Team Groups (using player assessments) are finalised prior to the
	Initial Trial Day.

Graded Team groups (probably 8 teams) can be teams of 8v8, 9v9, 10v10.

The trials will be in the form of a draw (eg. BLUE 1 vs BLUE 2) in a gala day style
	format.

Players will be moved up and down to different teams according to performance during
	the trials.

6	Players who attend grading will be required to attend 2 separate trial days.

The Initial Trial day will be primarily used to confirm which players will be ungraded
and need to attend the team grouping day for Yellow and Green teams.

The Final Trial day will be used to establish whether players go into Red or Blue teams.

AS YOU CAN IMAGINE THE GRADING PROCESS REQUIRES CONSIDERABLE VOLUNTEER MANPOWER TO BE
	SUCCESSFUL.

This years coaches will be asked to assist even if they are not going to coach next year
as they have the best knowledge of players.

Resources that will be needed are:

Personnel: 1 Age Coordinator, 2 referees and 8 grading coaches.

Equipment: 2 different colour Bibs with numbers for 4 x 10 players.
			2 soccer balls. 2 x ¾ fields

How: § Trial matches are 15 minutes long.

GRADING PROCESS

a	Grading Coaches are assigned to a Group Team.

Their initial role is to establish preferred playing positions and organise the players
into a team while the alternate matches are being played.

b	Grading Coaches are to identify players who wish to trial as goalkeepers.

If there are no takers consider playing without goalkeepers so all players get a fair
	chance to show their ability.

In the case of the Red team, "definite reds" once determined could be used as GK's.

c	During each match the 2 Grading Coaches will not coach the team, but will carry out
	grading selections.

Grading of both teams should be undertaken jointly and concurrently.

d	Following their teams' match they are to make grading recommendations to the RED/BLUE
	Age Coordinator.

The actual number of players to move up or down will to a certain extent depend on what
	is happening in other groups.

e	The RED/BLUE Age Coordinator will establish revised team groups, which are to be
recorded on the Team Group Sheet for each Round.

U9 AGE COORDINATORS

Next year Jim Koopman will not be the U9 Coordinator as he would like to work with his sons U10
age group.

U9's is an important year for the players as they transition from grouped teams to graded teams.

This means more organisation and more helpers is important to the ongoing success of Pittwater
Soccer Club.

It is expected that this organisation comes substantially from within the Age Group as the club
does not usually have sufficient volunteers to "outsource".

For 2003 we are looking for 2 Age Co-ordinators for the U9's.

One for the 4 x RED/BLUE teams and another for the 4 x YELLOW/GREEN teams.

Once the initial grading and grouping outlined above is done there is generally not to much more
to do.

Ideally the Coordinators would have access to e-mail as I have found this has made communication
cheap and quick.

(I generally try to avoid ringing people like the plague.)

The tasks of each coordinator would be:

a	Yellow/green team grouping U9 players will be asked whether they wish to trial for a
	graded team at Registration.

Players who do not wish to trial will attend a Team Grouping Day.

The YELLOW GREEN Age Coordinator organises players into groups based on past teams,
friends, schools etc. and then confirms coaches and managers.

The team information is given to the Registrar.

b	Red/blue team grading U9 players will be asked whether they wish to trial for a graded
	team at Registration.

The Age Coordinator with the assistance of 8 Grading Coaches (see above in "Grading
Process) runs the Grading and has the final say in RED/BLUE Team makeup.

c	Pre-season matches

Advise your team managers of the playing times and locations for pre season matches.

d	Overnight wet weather

In the subjunior age groups, washed out games are NOT replayed.

The latest information about ground withdrawals is available on the relevant Council
	Wet Weather lines.

However in situations where there is bad weather overnight the Age Coordinators will be
advised early on Saturday morning by the Competition Secretary so that they can in turn
	advise their team managers.

e	Player shortages

Occasionally due to sickness or holidays teams struggle to field the required number of
	players.

If the manager is unable to find replacement players he/she calls the Age Coordinator
who liaises with other Pittwater teams.

f	Committee

The Age Coordinators liaises with the subjunior vice president or to the Committee once
	a month.

g	Strikers Cup Squad

On a Sunday in July/August a selected Pittwater U9 squad will play in a round robin
	ended with a finals knockout.

The games are 15 minutes each way played on full size fields.

Pittwater RSL Soccer Club are the 1999 and 2000 Champions.

It is anticipated that trials for this squad will occur late in June and the squad will
	undertake separate coaching.

The RED/BLUE Age Coordinator would assist with team selections.

For the past 4 years the Club has found a special coach for this select squad.

h	U9 Gala Day

The Under 9 Gala Day is held on the last round in August.

The competition is a gala day between equally graded teams.

Each team will play a number of matches in a round robin with a presentation taking
place at the end of the day.

During June four matches will be designated for results to be recorded and submitted to
the Age Coordinators to assist with Gala Day groupings.
